| Every attempt has
been made for this website to be a fun and exciting place for family
members. But this site cannot reach its full potential
unless it is a collaborative effort of all of the family, regardless of
age or location, and it is hoped that this will be much more than a place to spend a few moments viewing documents pertaining to who we are and where
we came from.
The following help files provide the information you should know
to easily navigate the site. They will familiarize you with
how our document folders are arranged and will provide hints so that
you can truly be a part of the site. We want you to come back again and again to add your own content, whether it consists of photos, essays, anecdotes, family recipes, or forum contributions; or just to comment on what others have posted; to check-out/add-to the family calendar; to send a card; or even just to chat in the chat rooms or to play a game! With your help, this website will not be a static, boring genealogy of names and dates, but a dynamic place to meet and greet, or reacquaint yourself with, other members of our widespread and diverse family. In addition to explaining what you can do here, and hints for using the site, you will find information about why this website was created; hopes for its future; and hints at protecting yourself in the big, wide-open world of the Internet. Please feel free to share your ideas for improving our family place. NOTE TO FAMILY & VISITORS, JANUARY, 2013: YOU WILL FIND THAT SEVERAL OF THE DOCUMENTS, BELOW, ARE MISSING, SUCH AS THE DESCRIPTION OF THE FILE/FOLDER STRUCTURE AND THE BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF THE FAMILY "SIGHT". THAT IS BECAUSE THE FORMAT OF THE HEART OF THE WEBSITE IS BEING CHANGED FROM A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SOFTWARE PROGRAMS TO A WORDPRESS WEBSITE WITH MULTIPLE WORDPRESS "PLUGINS". HENCE, THE FORMER INSTRUCTIONS ARE NO LONGER RELEVENT. THEY WILL BE REPLACED WITH THEIR EQUIVALENT, RELEVENT TO THE NEW WEBSITE STRUCTURE, WHEN THEY HAVE BEEN REWRITTEN. THIS MAJOR RESTRUCTING OF THE WEBSITE WAS DEEMED NECESSARY FOR TWO REASONS DERIVING FROM THE FORMER ARCHITECTURE OF THE WEBSITE, AND THE MAJOR HACK THAT IT EXPERIENCED, FORCING THE WEBMASTER TO SHUT IT DOWN: FIRST, THE VARIOUS PIECES OF SOFTWARE THAT MADE UP THE PRIOR WEBSITE WERE VULNERABLE TO ATTACK BY HACKERS, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. THE HACK WAS FAR MORE SERIOUS THAN COULD BE REPAIRED. THE SECOND REASON FOR THE CHANGE IS THAT THE INDIVIDUAL PIECES OF THE PRIOR WEBSITE WERE NOT LINKED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ONE USER NAME & PASSWORD WOULD ALLOW ACCESS TO EVERY FUNCTION. IN ADDITION, THE WORKLOAD ON THE WEBMASTER WAS HIGH BECAUSE VARIOUS FUNCTIONS WERE MANUAL RATHER THAN AUTOMATED. THE NEW VERSION WILL INCLUDE ADDED AUTOMATION AND THAT CAPACITY FOR UNIVERSAL ACCESS WITH ONE USERNAME AND PASSWORD. IT WILL ALSO INCLUDE THE CAPACITY FOR VISITORS TO COMMENT, EVEN BLOG, IF THEY LIKE. ADDING PHOTOS & DOCUMENTS WILL BE EASIER TOO. THERE WILL ALSO BE OTHER ADDED FUNCTIONALITY, INCLUDING A FULL-BLOWN VERSION OF A SOCIAL SITE, LIKE FACEBOOK, AND ALL OF THIS WILL HAVE, IT IS HOPED, A HIGH LEVEL OF SECURITY THAT WILL PREVENT, OR AT LEAST MINIMIZE, THE CHANCES OF ANOTHER DISASTEROUS CRASH. |
